  • Gym Supervisor (part time)

    The Gym Supervisor is responsible for managing all aspects of the Hubbard Gymnasium, inclusive of sports equipment, sports scheduling, supervising activities, character development (gym etiquette and sportsmanship), and safety and security of the YMCA facility and members.

    Primary duties of this position include:

    Supervise set-up and break down of equipment. (raise/lower dividing curtain, set-up/take down volleyball net, raise/lower basketball goals, etc…)
    Properly store, maintain, and secure sports equipment (before and after) gym time.
    Ensures set up, clean up and put away of facility and equipment before and after programs.
    Supervises games and activities to ensure they are played according to the gym rules as well as the YMCA standards and values.
    Keep Sports closet and equipment secure, clean, and in order.
    Attends any scheduled staff meetings or training.
    Manages any unsportsmanlike conduct by members.
    Keeps daily summaries and facility usage, using appropriate forms. Communicates with Sports Director on a weekly basis.
    Ensures that gymnasium is in order before leaving (equipment secured, baskets raised to official heights, etc…) and gym schedules and gym signs are updated and posted.
    Assists sports instructors whenever necessary to maintain credibility and consistency of sports programs.
    Assists with special events whenever necessary.
    Notifies the Sports Director of schedule problems with sufficient notice. Ensures shift coverage when schedules change.
    Keeps Sports Director informed of all first aid issues, discipline or other significant problems.
    Records and reports all incidents / accidents on the official incident report form.

    1. A high school diploma or its equivalency. :
    2. Experience and familiarity with gymnasium and equipment
    3. Experience working with children and/or adults is preferred.

    Incumbent will work up to 27.5 hours per week at hourly rate of $9.75 and FREE FAMILY Y MEMBERSHIP.

  • Rock Climbing Coordinator (part time)

    The Summit YMCA seeks an experienced and certified Rock Climbing Coordiinator.    Primary duties include:
    • Maintain safety at all times in Summit YMCA climbing area.
    • Teach safety techniques to all climbing participants.
    • Educate all eligible candidates about proper knots and belaying techniques.
    • Keep climbing area safe for all participants, evaluating structures and equipment.
    • Assist in the cleaning and remapping of the routes as scheduled.
    • Expand programming and enrollment for youth and adults.
    • Create, develop, and implement a new rock climbing curriculum to increase enrollment at the Summit YMCA
    • Certification as a belaying/indoor rock climbing instructor
    • 18+ years old
    • 2 or more years’ related experience preferred, preferably in an indoor rock climbing gym
    • Prior Rock Climbing programming experience preferred
    • Flexible schedule that includes working nights and weekends
    Incumbent will work up to 27.5 hours a week at hourly rate of $10.50 with a FREE FAMILY Y MEMBERSHIP.

  • Experienced Rock Wall Climber Needed

    The Summit YMCA is seeking an experienced rock wall climber to supervise and instruct students of all ages on our 500 square foot rock wall on Saturdays. Additional hours available on an as needed basis


    • Monitor rock wall area to ensure safety of climbers and rock wall area while providing excellent customer service and climbing instructions to all levels of climbers
    • Assist and belay climbers
    • Supervise all participants on the wall to ensure safety procedures are adhered, maintain member files and waiver forms, and submit accident/incident reports to the Sports Director.
    • Encourage members to step outside of their fitness comfort zone by explaining and demonstrating climbing equipment and methods.
    • Participate in volunteer activities throughout the year.


    •  High school diploma or GED.
    • 6 months to 1 year climbing experience.
    • Belay certification preferred but not required.
    • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Youth Sports Instructors

  • Swim Instructor

    Essential Functions:

    • Instructs swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
    • Develops positive relationships with members and participants and provides motivational support and guidance.
    • Encourages member and parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
    • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other programs.
    • Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
    • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
    • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
    • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.  Reports damaged equipment.
    • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
    • Maintains constant supervision of students, watch for swimmers needing assistance, and aid swimmers when necessary to ensure positive learning environment.


    Must have YMCA/American Red Cross Lifeguard or YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant Certification. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer Certifications.  YSL or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification within one year of signing this paper.  Minimum of two years of swim lesson instruction experience in a YMCA program.   FREE Y MEMBERSHIP!    EOE


  • Lifeguard (Daytime hours)

    Essential Functions:

    • Maintains constant surveillance of the water, deck and pool areas at all times.  Actively scans the pool to achieve a 10 x 10 reaction time.
    • Knows, understands and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
    • Maintains a professional attitude and appearance.
    • Be on time and in proper uniform/equipment for each shift.
    • Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
    • Give 100% attention to the patrons and operation of the pool area.  Be alert, vigilant and conscientious.
    • Maintain current certifications (Lifeguard, CPR-PR, First-Aid)
    • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Y policies and procedures.   Completes related reports as required.  
    • Knows all Aquatic Department policies and procedures and adheres to them.
    • Helps in maintaining pool area, including testing (chlorine and pH readings), cleaning, equipment and chemicals and completes all appropriate forms (accident report, fecal/vomitus report) thoroughly and legibly and in a timely manner.
    • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
    • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.


    • Must have a current certificate in YMCA, BSA, American Red Cross Lifeguard, Professional Rescuer CPR/AED and First Aid.  Must attend and pass certification classes offered for Emergency Oxygen Administration, Asthma Inhaler and Epi-Pen Administration within 6 months of hire.  Must be a minimum of 15 years old.  FREE Y MEMBERSHIP!

  • Youth Development Executive

    The Summit Area YMCA has an exciting new opportunity for a Youth Development Executive!  This position has responsibility for child care, camp, and teen programs from age 3 through high school in our 2 branch facilities and across our service area.  This is a senior level position reporting directly to the President and CEO of a $13MM budget Association in a beautiful mid-New Jersey location.

    The Youth Development Executive will manage and support Childcare/Camp and Middle School/Teen Directors providing programming for childcare, camp, teens, Achievers, Adventure Guides, Middle School programs, After-school programs, youth enrichment and youth sports.  Key Responsibilities include:

    • Develop and maintain consistently high quality care and programs for children and teens in accordance with Y standards 
    • Introduce innovative youth programs to meet the emerging and evolving interests and needs of diverse youth in the service area
    • Recruit, develop and supervise staff
    • Build and grow relationships with families, members and community partners
    • Manage and oversee school buses, inclusive of scheduling, maintenance, purchase, etc.
    • Assume leadership role in annual staff and community campaigns
    • Develop and manage annual department budget and monitor expenses on a monthly basis.
    • Support Association volunteer efforts through placement and engagement of volunteers
    • Build strong and cooperative relationships with branch Executive Directors and their staff.
    • Plan children’s activities in the branches and communities.
    • Ensure that all equipment and facilities are well maintained.
    • Serve as a champion for child sexual abuse prevention

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a child related field, or equivalent
    • 5 years of demonstrated success in leading, developing and growing youth programs
    • 5 years of staff supervision experience in a diverse environment
    • High level of aptitude for relevant computer applications
    • Ability to effectively communicate with members, families, and staff on the phone or in person.
    • Patience to deal with high volumes of people, issues, and competing priorities.
    • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills for dealing with a variety of situations and with diverse people.

  • Sports Director

    Association-wide full time position

    The Sports Director develops, organizes and implements high quality YMCA sports programs for the Summit and Berkeley Heights branches.

    Essential Functions:

    • Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities. Transports and sets up equipment for games and practices.  Monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment as budget permits.
    • Creates teams from paid and financially assisted registrations. Organizes and conducts parent orientation meetings, and training and meetings for coaches for all leagues.
    • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules.  Trains and schedules sports officials.  Develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines and handbooks.
    • Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards. Coordinates and distributes team photographs.
    • Develops, organizes and conducts sports clinics & classes
    • Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
    • Assists in the marketing and distribution of youth and adult sports program information.  May organize and schedule program registrations.  May review and process program scholarship applications.
    • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. 
    • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
    • Organizes and hosts season parties and events.
    • Directly supervises department’s part time employees and volunteers. Recruits, trains, and develops part time program staff and volunteers.
    • Responds to all member and community inquiries and issues in timely manner.   Resolves problems and builds good will for the Y.
    • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.
    • Obtain CDL license within 6 months of employment.

     Minimum Qualifications:

    • A Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
    • One to two years related experience preferred.
    • Professional when dealing with children, volunteers, referees, staff, and parents.
    • Minimum age of 21.
    • Flexible work schedule.  Ability to work evenings and weekends.
    • CPR; First Aid; AED or ability to obtain certification training.
    • Current license to drive with record that meets YMCA standards with the ability to obtain CDL license within 6 months of employment.
